Lymbyc System: How Denver let us down but we had fun anyway

Posted in music, events, shows at 11:46 am by cynthusia

It was almost an accident that I found out that Lymbyc System were coming to Denver. I was recently at “Disintegration”, our monthly goth/industrial night at Benders, and happened to look at the upcoming events flyer for the venue. in the middle of a long list of things i did not recognize, i spot “Lymbyc System”! whoa.

so i dutifully enter the date into my phone calendar, and plans are set. in the next couple of weeks, i do not see any other notice about the show - no flyers, no myspace bulletins, nuthin’. until 3 days before the actual show, of course. (Benders is my ‘friend’ on myspace so i finally saw a bulletin).

i must say i was surprised that it was booked at Benders. typically bands i like play at Hi-Dive or Larimer Lounge. but whatever, i was excited anyway.

we got to the show just before the first band (a local one; Josephine and the Mouse People) finished. there were a handful of people, their friends, dancing around. good energy. i’d like to see them perform again. Then The Life There Is went on, to an empty room save for me and Chase, and the Lymbyc System posse and a couple of other people.

at this point i realized that no one else in this entire big city of ours was coming to the show.

Lymbyc System went on, and i think there were 5 or 6 of us in attendance. Technically Chase and i were the only non-band and non-friend and non-venue people - and we didn’t even pay to get in (the door guy was sleeping…). Actually Chase did end up paying 5 bucks when he went into the other room and came back. but still. really?

they played a GREAT show - as enthusiastic as they would have been in front of a sold out crowd. i almost felt guilty for being there, for having this amazing private show. for the last song (maybe two, my memory is hazy) we all got up on the stage and danced and clapped and Chase even played the Micro Korg for a bit.

i feel bad for the bands, and i also feel confused. i mean, i saw Lymbyc System in Tampa and from what i remember it was a good turnout. one of the reasons i moved from Tampa to Denver was years and years of poorly attended shows and such…. i am bewildered to encounter the same thing in Denver!!! at first i blamed Benders, for not promoting it more. but then, i have to also question the music geeks in this town. is it really that hard to keep an eye out for shows that don’t happen at the typical venues?

you shoulda been there. but, you weren’t and it’s totally your loss, suckas! ;)

queen of sheba (tampa)

Queen of Sheba
3636 Henderson Blvd., Tampa, FL
Phone 813-872-6000

my very first (and last) taste of Ethiopian cuisine in Tampa was Ibex on Platt St. right before it closed it’s doors almost eight years ago. what a tease! as a vegetarian i was in heaven with the various lentil and split pea tasties, and as soon as i discovered it, it was gone.

perhaps ironically another Ethiopian restaurant has opened in Tampa just months after i decide to move away. but it’s okay; i visit often, and now i will have something to look forward to.

if you google for reviews on Queen of Sheba, you will find many notes of disappointing service, but my friends and i went on a monday evening around 8pm and didn’t have any problems.

for an appetizer we got sambusas (much like Indian samosas) which were very tastey. for dinner we ordered the meat combo and the vegetarian plate. while i can only vouch for the latter, the meat combo included the specialty raw beef called ‘kitfo’ which i’m told was very good. everything included on the veggie plate was awesome. my favorites were most of the lentil and split peas, but i really liked the cabbage and collard greens.

tokidoki on lynda.com

lynda.com released a new “creative inspiration” video featuring tokidoki creator Simone Legno. i watched the hour long video in it’s entirety yesterday, not really knowing much about tokidoki. i am now a Big Fan.

if you are a lynda.com subscriber, i highly recommend you watch it. Legno shows his creative process from the sketchbook phase to a final Illustrator file. Don’t expect to learn too much about Illustrator itself, save for a couple of keyboard shortcuts he mentions that most people probably already use. but it’s neat to see him from start to finish. as a beginner at illustration i definitely learned a thing or two, though mostly it was inspiring.

after over eight years of living in Tampa, I moved back to my hometown, Denver. since there is so much more to do and see, I plan on writing about a lot of it here. i’ve already seen a lot of great bands and dined at amazing restaurants, and other random fun stuff. hopefully i won’t let too much more time pass before getting back into the blogging thang.

in the meantime, i have started playing bass guitar again, and set up a little music studio in my apartment. i also set up a whole separate art/craft studio. we’ll see what i can do with all this space and time and inspiration…

my old le tigre remix is on this site called Funky Remixes… i dunno, kinda cool. their description: “A electronic/punk styled remix… a very unique remix with a great beat.”

and, my ugly barrettes were mentioned on somebody’s craft blog.

candybars on music for robots

this is really funny:

“Candy Bars are two, sometimes three folks from Tampa, Florida. Not the most indie of cities, it’s more known for its metal scene than anything else. I guess in this age of the internets I shouldn’t be surprised where a band is from anymore, but I still get a little excited when a band isn’t from Brooklyn or Portland or Omaha. It reminds me that there are organic scenes out there where people go to open mics and tiny shows and encourage their friends and strangers to make music. Still, I’m the type of asshole who is going to admire Tampa from afar, and take it on faith that it’s rad there. Can’t be helped, really.”
